\nof how our humor died.
\nFor once we laughed when actors laughed,
\nand when they cried, we cried.<\/p>\n
When film was new and no one knew
\nquite how to summon laughter,
\nthe audience would take the lead,
\nour laughs would follow after.<\/p>\n
But every now and then a quip,
\nwould not seem as clever.
\nWithout the crowing crowd to cue,
\nno laughter whatsoever.<\/p>\n
And so they sought the aid of one,
\nwho captured that glad sound,
\nthe cheerful noise that lifts us up,
\ncopied, cut and bound.<\/p>\n
He used a secret magic box,
\nthen took what wasn’t funny,
\nsweetened it just to our taste,
\nand made a ton of money.<\/p>\n
So now we sit and watch and wait,
\nfor a machine to tell us when,
\nto react according to the prompt,
\nthen quiet and wait again.<\/p>\n
